Project naming rule change: certain special characters disallowed

Last updated: July 3, 2026

If you're trying to create or rename a project and running into an error with special characters in the name, here's why that's happening.

Why this changed

In March 2026, we went through a penetration test and found that certain special characters in input fields could be exploited. Depending on the character, they can enable code execution, be used to extract information, or be used to target other users. As a security requirement, we had to restrict these characters across project titles, workspace titles, and profile names.

We know this is an inconvenience if you've been using square brackets for naming conventions, but it was a necessary call.

What's blocked

The following characters are no longer allowed in project names, workspace titles, and profile names:

< > " { } [ ] * ^ ! # % \

What's still allowed

Characters like - . , : ( ) are still supported, so you have some flexibility in how you structure your naming conventions.

What happens to existing projects

If you already have projects with square brackets or other restricted characters in their names, you don't need to do anything. Those names are grandfathered in. The restriction only applies when creating a new project or renaming an existing one going forward.
