Not receiving notifications in Plane

Last updated: July 3, 2026

Not getting notifications you'd expect? Work through these checks in order.

Check your notification preferences

Go to Profile Settings → Notifications and make sure the right toggles are on. State changes, property updates, comments, and mentions can all be switched off individually, so it's worth checking each one.

One thing worth knowing: these toggles only control email notifications. In-app inbox notifications always come through regardless.

Make sure you're subscribed to the work item

Plane only notifies people who are subscribed, assigned, or created the work item. If you're none of those, you won't get anything. Open the work item and add yourself as a subscriber from the detail panel.

Also keep in mind, Plane never notifies you about your own changes, so if you made the update yourself, that's expected.

Still not getting emails?

Email notifications are batched. Plane groups changes together and sends them every 5 minutes. A short delay is normal. If they're still not showing up:

  • Check your spam or junk folder

  • Confirm the email toggle is on in Profile Settings → Notifications

  • If you're on a self-hosted instance, check that SMTP is configured correctly in God Mode

Push notifications not coming through?

Your phone can silence push notifications independently of anything inside Plane. Check two things: that Plane is allowed to send notifications in your phone's system settings, and that you haven't muted them inside the app itself.

For self-hosted instances

If your users aren't receiving notifications or unique codes, work through these steps. You'll need instance admin access to God Mode.

1. Set up SMTP

Notifications and unique codes are delivered by email, so your instance needs SMTP configured first. Go to God Mode → Settings → Email and enter your SMTP details. If this isn't set up, email delivery won't work at all.

Configure SMTP for email notifications

2. Turn on the Unique codes toggle

Once SMTP is in place, go to God Mode → Settings → Authentication and enable the Unique codes authentication method.

Manage authentication in God Mode

3. If codes or notifications are still not arriving

With SMTP configured and the toggle on, check these:

  • Ask the user to look in their spam or junk folder

  • Double-check your SMTP credentials and sender email in God Mode

  • Make sure you're using username/password SMTP auth — OAuth-based SMTP (like Gmail OAuth) isn't supported
